Stop Illegal Dumping Along the Ngong River

Residents along the Ngong River corridor have watched the water quality deteriorate steadily over the past several years. Plastic waste, untreated grey water, and in some stretches suspected industrial runoff collect along the banks, especially near informal settlements where waste collection services rarely reach.

This is not just an environmental concern — it is a public health one. Children play near these banks, women wash clothes in this water, and some households still rely on it for informal irrigation. Illness linked to contaminated water exposure has been reported by local clinics, though it often goes unrecorded as river-related.

We are calling on the County Department of Environment to increase patrols and enforcement against illegal dumping, install clearly marked waste collection points along known hotspots, and commit to a community-led river cleanup program with proper protective equipment and follow-up water testing. Fines for repeat industrial offenders should also be publicly disclosed to build accountability.
