Install Speed Bumps and Pedestrian Crossings Near Primary Schools

Several primary schools along busy roads have no speed bumps, marked crossings, or crossing guards, putting children at serious risk every school day. Basic traffic-calming measures at these known hotspots could prevent accidents before they happen.

Every morning and afternoon, young children cross busy roads to get to and from school — often without a single speed bump, zebra crossing, or road sign warning drivers that a school is nearby. Several near-miss incidents have already been reported by parents and teachers at schools along this route, and it is only a matter of time before one becomes a tragedy.

We are asking the County Roads Department to conduct a safety audit of all primary schools situated along Class B and C roads, and to prioritize installing speed bumps, clear "School Ahead" signage, and marked pedestrian crossings at the highest-risk locations within this financial year.

This is a low-cost, high-impact intervention. The materials and labor required are modest compared to the cost of even a single preventable accident. We ask that child safety near schools be treated as a standing infrastructure priority, not an afterthought addressed only after an incident occurs.
