Equip Rural Health Centers with Basic Maternity Units
Many rural dispensaries across Kenya lack even basic maternity facilities, forcing expectant mothers to travel long distances — sometimes over an hour — to reach the nearest hospital with delivery services. This puts both mothers and newborns at serious risk, especially during emergencies.
Access to safe maternal care should not depend on how close you live to a major town. In many sub-county health centers, women in labor are turned away because there is no delivery bed, no trained midwife on duty at night, or no basic newborn resuscitation equipment.
We are calling on the County Department of Health to prioritize equipping at least one dispensary or health center in every ward with a functional maternity unit — including a delivery bed, clean water supply, basic newborn care equipment, and a rotating midwife roster covering nights and weekends.
This is not a luxury request. Preventable maternal and newborn deaths continue to occur simply because help was too far away. We ask that this be treated as an urgent public health priority in the next budget cycle.
